The organisation behind funding for films like the Last King Of Scotland, Vera Drake and Bend It Like Beckham has been scrapped in a cost-cutting drive by the new British government.
The U.K. Film Council, which was founded in 2000 to channel investments of $22.5 million (£15 million)-a-year to fund British-made movies, has been deemed surplus to requirements by the nation's new coalition government.
Culture leaders have disbanded the organisation as part of sweeping plans to help rescue Britain from debt.
A statement from the U.K. Department for Culture, Media and Sport, reads, "(It is) clear that culture and creative industries will not be singled out as a soft target, and that the government will champion the value they bring."
The statement added that funding will reach the U.K. film industry through other bodies.
Other films funded by the Film Council include Nowhere Boy, Man on a Wire, Gosford Park and Bright Star.
